How Long is a Piece of String
How Long is a Piece of String? will be a magical and immersive piece of interactive dance theatre for children 4-9 and families. It will engage imaginations through sensory opportunities to play and inspire curiosity and learning through physical movement and interactive sound technology.
String and Strong just can’t get along, but what if YOU could teach them how? Holding hands? Sharing a giggle? What are the things that create a friendship?
The show will be an inclusive and warm experience for children and families. Welcomed via a playful lobby installation, audience members will be invited to speak into balls of wool and to offer their suggestions about how to give the best hug ever. These recordings become part of the performance, eventually helping String and Strong hug for the very first time.
In the theatre the theme of connection and touch continue with a system that allows children and families to create sound through touch. This will be facilitated through technology via a Playtronica which turns human skin into a musical instrument and makes both their point of touch with their family member, and their string, playable.
Audiences will be invited to be a part of the show and to play along with String and Strong as they learn how to laugh, play and connect, hearing their own answers about hugging played back to them in the theatre space.
Families will be invited, at the end of each show, to join in a celebratory dance and to stay afterwards to meet the dancers and the creative team.

“I sat and watched the Rehearsal for How Long is a Piece of String, completely captivated by its vibrance and uniqueness. The use of Sensory is so meaningful in this piece. I sat and thought my two-year-old would love this. He has missed out on so many sensory engagements , and rather than just sitting in an audience, you get the opportunity here to create Sounds, that lead you down an empathetic and stimulating path. Rather than a spectator, you are a valued participant.
